DEMCo is the NWT’s first-ever mining exploration business wholly owned by the territory’s 27 Dene First Nations. Darrell Beaulieu, DEMCo President and CEO is also head of DEMCo’s owner, Denendeh Investments Incorporated. “The Dene should be exploring and benefiting from the resources in their homeland. We believe DEMCo’s in a great position to make this happen,” says Beaulieu.

Board members in addition to Mr. Beaulieu are Mike Magrum, a mining engineer who staked and optioned claims to the booming diamond industry. Avi Isackson a businessman from Edmonton who has been providing Chartered Accounting and business advisory services to Dene First Nations for over 30 years. And John Bekale, a former Chief in the NWT and past Vice-President of Dene Nation, worked with Ekati Mines as Senior Aboriginal Advisor for close to 20 years.

While Chief of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation for 10 years, Darrell Beaulieu fostered positive relations between the First Nations and the mining industry, with commendation from the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada as 2016’s recipient of the Skookum Jim Award, in recognition of exceptional achievement in the mineral industry. Today, the  focus is on turning DEMCo into the North’s newest success story.

Exploring Our Opportunities

Now is the best time to build capacity and be ready for the growth brought by the inevitable turnaround in the NWT Mining industry. Part of DEMCo’s vision is to create financial wealth for DEMCo and its partners, create pride of ownership for the Dene and enhance positive relations between the NWT Dene First Nations and the mining industry. We have acquired properties with great potential. Now we have to add value to the properties, which we’ll do with our partners.

Along with positive preliminary project results, DEMCo’s competitive edge is a unique combination of strong relationships with Dene communities, the NWT mining community and the territorial and federal governments. Through experience, we know who needs to be at the table to talk about the next steps, as an Indigenous-owned company, we strongly believe in doing things right from the start to avoid unnecessary issues down the road. DEMCo’s projects could be incredibly beneficial for the NWT’s mining industry, as well as Indigenous people.
